2014 - Phoenix Fashion Week's Top Models Announcement Recap

By Toy Taylor

The night was filled with an intoxicating energy at the International Nightclub in Scottsdale, AZ that kept the entire club all a buzz. The music was hyped, lights were down low, and the runway was lit up with paparazzi waiting for the big moment. If the incredible team at Phoenix Fashion Week set out to "wow" the crowd they truly succeeded with that night’s festivities. I was feeling all giddy inside and couldn’t wait to check out the winning finalists.

After what I'm sure was a challenging yet in-depth search for this year's models, it was time for the top 40 finalists to show us what they will be bringing to the runway at the fall event. With the wait finally over, Executive Director Brian Hill got the party started by announcing each female and male model. As each model got to strut their way down the runway, we got to check out each individual headshots on the big screen. The crowd then voted by posting to Twitter their favorite model headshot selection. Once all the responses were in, a top female and top male finalists were named winners of the headshot challenge. Congratulations to both Sammy and Nico for scoring the top prize!

After the show, I had the opportunity to chat with a few of the models. It was crazy cool to have such an easygoing conversation with a person you just saw give the "fierce face" on the runway. I loved it! Many of the models were just so excited to be a part of the Phoenix Fashion Week event. Here are a few pics of some of the PFW Top models. Wanna talk about fierceness?

Check out Nick and Nico giving 110% piercing attitude. Their energy was just amazing! To see additional live interviews with the models, please check out our page at Talking The Five.

Several of the emerging designers were also in attendance. Hues of Ego, State Forty Eight, Kismit, Woman's Touch Apparel, Lillienne Lang, and Misha Mendicino Designs, I believe were in the house. Their eyes were all twinkly envisioning their masterpiece on the perfect model. Since the recent emerging designer announcement, these ambitious designers have been working very hard on bringing their A-game to fruition. With just a little more than two months till the big October event, the featured designers are halfway through their rigorous boot camp workshop. I asked a few of them how things are going and each responded with a resounding….great! It was a fantastic evening which proved to be well worth the wait.

Fashion with a Cause - What Makes the Difference?

Mabella Chic and Woman's Touch Apparel
By Eva Louis - Video - Recap of the Brave Wings Fashion Show held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 7:00 pm - When you have individuals that see beyond the day to day and are truly dedicated to making a difference, you can do nothing else, but bring to the forefront what they are doing. Mabella Chic and Woman's Touch Apparel founders (Mabell Cortez and Jenesis Laforcarde) of the Brave Wings Fashion Show Charity Event are those such organizations and individuals.  They see beyond the value of just work but also giving.  This year their energy, effort, and time went into this 2nd Annual Charity Fashion Show that is entirely run by volunteers. They have dedicated the charitable proceeds to Ryan House  http://www.RyanHouse.org  The mission of Ryan House is to provide respite and palliative care to children with life-threatening conditions and, as needed, end-of-life care.  Beyond the Charity, this event allowed several local and other established designers and accessory designers to showcase their designs on runway as well as in the Shop Villa designed to give attendees ways to see the latest designs, purchase, and donate to the cause.  The event was emceed by the talented and creative Oscar De Las Salas and Irma Deihl, who can be seen often supporting local, regional and national events and causes.  The Venue in Scottsdale was home to the event and provided the perfect backdrop to a phoenomenal runway as well as a special performance from Yasmeen.

Fly Away Angel...A Tribute To A Friend

Everyday on this journey of edification of others and finding those most special individuals that make a difference in other peoples lives, you come across someone that is gifted in a special way to reach those that others may not be able to.  They themselves have lived a tough life and one that has challenged them in many ways and left them often times in dispair and without hope seeming.  But today and from now on, they are dedicated to making a difference no matter what it takes and they are forging through the challenges life has to offer with a smile on their face and happiness in their heart.  This one such person, I know, Jenny Blazey, is that amazing individual that has gifts that go for miles.  I am blessed and proud to know her.  She has overcome and accomplished so many things.  She has shared this poem with me and I promised I would make her proud of it by publishing it.  I hope you enjoy this as much as I do, because the meaning is deep and hits the heart powerfully if you have ever experienced loss in your life.  I'm grateful for the gifted individuals I come across.  Thank you Jenny!!!

Fly Away Angel
Written by Jenny Blazey

I'll remember your sweet face each and every day
and in my broken heart is were you will stay
there is nothing I can do to make you come back
then I closed my eyes and I saw the clouds slowly starting to open wide
and there were heavens gates on the other side
the gates started to open a hand came to me and was placed upon my head
I saw no face but these were the words that were said
you guys I know you miss me but please stop grieving now
God will do the rest he is really a great person
so I'm in great hands but I really have to go now
today I am getting my wings.
