It's a Bird. It's a Plane. It's Phoenix Comicon!!

Coverage by Eva Louis
It doesn’t matter the age or the background of the person, as you descend upon the goliath location known as the Phoenix Convention Center, what you see is the arms and legs of another beast that is in town for the weekend, also known as Phoenix Comicon.

Originally founded in 2002, Phoenix Comicon has come a long way.  It’s program schedule goes for days, four (4) days to be exact, and is fully loaded with Anime, Books – Authors, Comic Books and Superheroes, Costuming, Educational, Film & Web, Gaming, ‘Horror, Paranormal and Monsters’, Music & Parties, Outdoor Events, Science Fiction, Steam Punk, Web Comics, and finally ‘Youth, Art Contest & Activities’.

Being an early bird was a total bonus at registration and the lines while they looked potentially overwhelming, the crowd waited patiently with quiet excitement as they counted down to the official door opening, and there was literally no chaos or panic.  Lines were self-managed and everyone was just excited to make their entry.  Phoenix Comicon was smart and has registration inside (with expected temperatures in the high 90s – low 100s – it’s the only way to go).   The biggest bonus at registration this year was the merchandising and the sale of t-shirts this year.  They hadn’t done that in the past officially, so this was the first and the lines surely represent that they will be bringing back t-shirts for years to follow.  Also, another bonus was the tote bag loaded with a gifted book (Illuminae, pictured below) as part of the purchase.

Phoenix Comicon demonstrates their experience in producing a great event based on the numbers of volunteers, street vendors in wait, security, and great signage as you enter the building.  They direct everyone to go to registration first before entering the activities areas so you can pick up your program and badge and other branding material.

What us geeks love is that there is a map and programming that gives you 20 different ways (at least) to find all the things you love.

Some of the guest highlights of those who will be in attendance and presenting are as follows:
  • Kevin Phipps, Friday at 1:30 pm, DIRECTING WORKSHOP WITH KEVIN R. PHIPPS (FILM SCHOOL)
  • Charisma Carpenter, Friday at 4:30 pm, known for role Cordelia Chase on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
  • Jason Momoa, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, known for role as the iconic character “Conan”
  • Andrea Coffman, Saturday 10: 30 am, AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW
  • Hal C F Astell, Saturday at 9:00 pm, APOCALYPSE LATER STEAMPUNK FILM FESTIVAL
  • Alyson Hannigan, Saturday and Sunday only, most recently from “How I Met Your Mother”
  • Christopher Lloyd, Sunday at 10:30 am, known for his role as Doc Emmett Brown in the “Back to the Future” trilogy,

LiFF Does It Again!!! A Film Festival that Rocks!!!!

Just finished attending the 2014 Laughlin International Film Festival (LiFF) this weekend and was blown away for the second year in a row by an outstanding overall film festival production for the four days (October 16 – 19th).
Erik Karsen Puhm, Mara Karsen Puhm, and Dave Davidson Co-Founders of the Laughlin International Film Festival have outdone themselves again by continuing the annual tradition of honoring and recognizing filmmakers from all over the world that participate and submit to the festival.  They are building a community that is becoming family and many are already planning on next year’s “Filmmaker Family Reunion” and looking forward to all the new additions to the extended family.

The host city of Laughlin, NV along with the Tropicana Express (main Host location), Riverside Casino, the Acquarius and the Laughlin Outlets Mall –Stadium 9 Cinemas (viewing home of the films that made it into the festival) again proved to provide the perfect mix of location and environment to welcome filmmakers from all over as well as offer a close-knit set-up that enabled viewings, red-carpet photos and interviews (provided by Gianna Nicole Inc.), workshops, and of course all the parties.  The support from the community is clearly evident and it was nice to have so many visitors asking about the buzz and what was going on with all the festival attendees.  The word is getting out about this festival and the only direction for this event is UP and future growth is without any doubt going to happen.

So here’s the quick run-down on the Film Awards presented at the widely appreciated and spectacular Awards Banquet (that included the opening emcee, Owen Dara, known and loved for his acting, comedy, filmmaking and great personality) that really exceeds expectations of all in attendance . (Disclaimer: This listing is a quick recap – in case any misspellings or errors - updates will be made accordingly as this information was captured at the event and the formal listing from LiFF will be published on their website)

From the Apocalypse to New Age of Aquarius

FROM THE APOCALYPSE TO NEW AGE OF AQUARIUS
There are many organizations and charities that need assistance year round.  Those same organizations and charities support many creative avenues that can benefit several in the community from children to adults. One of those organizations is the Arizona Consortium for the Arts, Inc. They are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, community organization. The consortium's vision is to establish a multicultural, multidisciplinary arts center with an open door policy. Their programs seek to help nurture and support under-served and economically disadvantaged populations through the promotion of the arts.  They are dedicated to creating a connection with our diverse community through artistic, cultural and educational events.

You might be asking what this event "Apocalypse to Aquarius" is all about.  Since December 21, 2012 is recognized as ushering in the New Age of Aquarius and the passing of the Apocalyptic end via the Mayan Calendar, what a better way to celebrate December than with a party.  In addition to this idea, it is also commonly know that during certain holidays that birthdays some times get lost in the mix of all the commercial marketing and publicity and the hustle and bustle of the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.  With all these things in mind, what a better way to celebrate with a purpose, enjoy December Birthday's and then support a cornerstone organization in the Arizona community than with a fun filled artistic costume party.

The theme of the costume party is the New Age of Aquarius and will be decorated to fit the 60's and 70's with great music provided by DJ Donovan Hypes.  The event will be hosted by the newest location established for the artistic community, The A.R.C. (artistic resource center) 4635 N. Black Canyon Hwy, Phoenix, Arizona 85015.  Thanks to Monarch Media for supporting the event along with several designers and other artists coming out from the community there will be lots to have fun with.
So you want to support the artist community, you have a birthday to celebrate in December and want to get your groove back with a hippie in style dancing flare, check this event out and make a difference at the same time.
